Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for a Guyanese passport, you must be a citizen of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana. Citizenship can be acquired through:

Who Can Apply for a Guyanese Passport

Birth in Guyana: Persons born in Guyana to at least one Guyanese parent, or born in Guyana before independence (May 26, 1966) who were citizens at that time.
Descent: Persons born outside Guyana to a parent who is a Guyanese citizen by birth or descent (at least one parent must be Guyanese).
Registration: Commonwealth citizens, citizens of CARICOM states, or foreigners married to Guyanese citizens who have been registered as citizens.
Naturalization: Foreign nationals who have lived in Guyana for at least 7 years and have been granted naturalization.

Dual Citizenship

Guyana permits dual citizenship. You can hold a Guyanese passport alongside passports from other countries. However, when entering or leaving Guyana, you must use your Guyanese passport if you are a Guyanese citizen.

Required Documents: New Passport (Adults)

If you're applying for your first Guyanese passport as an adult (18 years and older), you'll need the following documents:

New Adult Passport Documents

Certified Birth Certificate: Original or certified copy issued by the General Register Office (GRO). Must show parents' names and your place of birth.
National Identification Card: Valid Guyana national ID card. If you don't have one, you must apply for it first.
Passport Photographs: Two recent passport-sized photographs (35mm x 45mm), taken within the last 6 months, white background, no glasses, neutral expression.
Completed Application Form: Form PP1 - available at passport offices or downloadable from the Ministry website. Must be filled out in black ink.
Marriage Certificate (if applicable): If your name differs from your birth certificate due to marriage, provide a certified marriage certificate.
Deed Poll (if applicable): If you've legally changed your name, provide the official deed poll document.

Important Notes

All documents must be originals or certified copies. Photocopies are not accepted. Ensure your birth certificate shows your parents' full names and nationalities. If born abroad to Guyanese parents, you'll need additional proof of your parents' citizenship.

Required Documents: Passport Renewal

Renewing an existing Guyanese passport is generally simpler than applying for a new one. Here's what you need:

Passport Renewal Documents

Current/Expired Passport: Your existing Guyanese passport (even if expired). This will be cancelled and returned to you or retained.
National Identification Card: Valid Guyana national ID card.
Passport Photographs: Two recent passport-sized photographs (35mm x 45mm), white background, neutral expression.
Completed Application Form: Form PP1 for renewals.
Birth Certificate (if needed): May be required if the passport office needs to verify information.

Renewal Tip

Apply for renewal at least 6 months before your passport expires if you travel frequently. Many countries require at least 6 months validity on your passport for entry. You can renew your passport even if it still has validity remaining.

Child Passport Requirements

Children under 18 require special documentation and parental consent to obtain a Guyanese passport. Child passports are valid for 5 years (compared to 10 years for adults).

Required Documents for Children (Under 18)

Child's Birth Certificate: Certified birth certificate showing both parents' names.
Passport Photographs: Two recent photographs of the child (same specifications as adults).
Completed Application Form: Form PP1 signed by both parents or legal guardian.
Parents' Identification: Both parents must provide valid national ID cards or passports.
Parents' Passports: Copies of both parents' passports (or Guyanese citizenship proof if no passport).
Parental Consent Form: Signed consent from both parents. If only one parent is available, additional documentation is required.

Single Parent or Guardian Applications

If only one parent is applying:

Child Protection Notice

Both parents must consent to a child's passport application to prevent international child abduction. The passport office may refuse applications where proper consent is not demonstrated. If you have concerns about a child's passport being applied for without your consent, contact the passport office immediately.

Application Process: Step by Step

Follow these steps to apply for your Guyanese passport:

1

Gather Required Documents

Collect all necessary documents as listed above. Ensure birth certificates and other documents are certified copies from the relevant government offices. Get passport photos taken at an approved photo studio.

Applying from Abroad

When applying from abroad, contact your nearest embassy or consulate to confirm current requirements, fees, and processing times. Some missions require appointments for passport services. Processing times are longer abroad because applications are forwarded to Georgetown for processing.

Lost or Stolen Passport Procedure

If your Guyanese passport is lost or stolen, you must follow a specific procedure to apply for a replacement:

1

Report to the Police

File a police report immediately at your nearest police station. In Guyana, go to your local police station. Abroad, report to local police and your nearest Guyanese embassy/consulate. Obtain a copy of the police report.

2

Prepare a Sworn Affidavit

Have a sworn affidavit (statutory declaration) prepared explaining the circumstances of the loss or theft. This must be witnessed by a Justice of the Peace, Commissioner of Oaths, or Notary Public.

3

Gather Replacement Documents

Collect all standard application documents (birth certificate, national ID, photographs, etc.) plus the police report and sworn affidavit. If possible, provide a photocopy of your lost passport.

4

Submit Replacement Application

Apply for a replacement passport at the passport office or embassy. Note that replacement passports may have a different number than your original and may take additional processing time for verification.

If Stolen Abroad - Emergency Travel Document

If your passport is stolen while traveling abroad and you need to return to Guyana urgently, contact the nearest Guyanese embassy or consulate. They can issue an Emergency Travel Document (ETD) to allow you to travel back to Guyana, where you can then apply for a regular replacement passport.

Additional Fees for Lost Passports

Replacing a lost or stolen passport may incur additional fees on top of the standard passport fee. Repeated losses may require additional investigation before a replacement is issued. Always safeguard your passport carefully.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Guyanese passport cost?

Standard processing costs GYD $15,000 (approximately USD $72) for adults and GYD $10,000 (~USD $48) for children. Express processing (5-7 days) costs GYD $30,000 for adults. Emergency processing (1-3 days) costs GYD $45,000. Fees are higher when applying through embassies abroad.

How long does it take to get a Guyanese passport?

Standard processing takes 10-14 working days. Express processing takes 5-7 working days. Emergency processing takes 1-3 working days. When applying from abroad, processing takes 4-8 weeks for standard and 2-4 weeks for express.

Can I apply for a Guyanese passport online?

Currently, you cannot complete the entire passport application online. You must submit your application in person at a passport office or embassy for biometric capture (photograph and fingerprints). However, application forms can be downloaded and pre-filled before your visit.

How long is a Guyanese passport valid?

Adult passports (18 years and older) are valid for 10 years. Child passports (under 18) are valid for 5 years. This shorter validity for children accounts for physical changes as they grow.

Can I renew my passport before it expires?

Yes, you can renew your Guyanese passport at any time, even if it hasn't expired yet. This is recommended if your passport has less than 6 months validity and you plan to travel, as many countries require 6 months passport validity for entry.

Do I need to be in Guyana to apply for a passport?

No. Guyanese citizens living abroad can apply through Guyana's embassies and consulates. Contact your nearest diplomatic mission for their specific requirements and procedures.

Can I have dual citizenship and a Guyanese passport?

Yes, Guyana allows dual citizenship. You can hold a Guyanese passport alongside passports from other countries. When entering or leaving Guyana, you should use your Guyanese passport.

What if my child's father is unknown?

If the father is unknown, the mother must provide a sworn affidavit stating that the father is unknown. The child's birth certificate should reflect this. The mother can then apply as a single parent with sole responsibility.

Can someone else collect my passport for me?

Generally, passports should be collected in person. If you cannot collect your passport yourself, contact the passport office to inquire about authorized representative collection. This typically requires a signed authorization letter and the representative's ID.

What if there's an error in my new passport?

If you notice an error in your passport (misspelled name, wrong date of birth, etc.), report it immediately to the passport office before leaving. Errors that occurred during production are typically corrected free of charge. Do not accept a passport with errors.
